Ohio State Faces Miami in Cotton Bowl CFP Quarterfinal Showdown

The College Football Playoff quarterfinals kick off with an electrifying matchup tonight as defending national champion Ohio State takes on Miami in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This New Year's Eve clash puts two of college football's most storied programs on a collision course for a spot in the semifinals.

Defending Champions Eye Back-to-Back Titles

Ohio State enters the game as the No. 2 seed with a 12-1 record, led by head coach Ryan Day. The Buckeyes are attempting something they've never accomplished before: winning consecutive national championships. This marks their third straight appearance in the Cotton Bowl, with last year's Cotton Bowl serving as a CFP semifinal where they defeated Texas on their way to claiming their sixth AP national title.

The Buckeyes offense runs through freshman quarterback Julian Sayin, who has posted an incredible 78.4% completion percentage this season while throwing for 3,323 yards and 31 touchdowns. His connection with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has been particularly lethal, giving Ohio State one of the most dynamic passing attacks in college football.

Defensively, the Buckeyes boast five All-Americans, including safety Caleb Downs, who finished ninth in Heisman Trophy voting. Ohio State's defense has been historically dominant this season, not allowing more than 16 points in any game all year long.

Hurricanes Make First CFP Appearance

Miami makes its College Football Playoff debut after earning a 10-3 win over No. 7 Texas A&M in the first round. That defensive masterclass featured the only scoreless first half in CFP history, with the Hurricanes holding the Aggies to just three points for the entire game.

The Hurricanes are 24 years removed from their last national title but have found their rhythm at the perfect time, riding a five-game winning streak into tonight's matchup. After dropping to 5-2 following a heartbreaking overtime loss at SMU, Miami regrouped and hasn't looked back.

Quarterback Carson Beck has quietly been playing his best football of the season, throwing just one interception in his last five games while completing at least 70% of his passes in each contest. Beck's bounce-back year after transferring to Miami has reconstructed his NFL Draft stock and given the Hurricanes confidence heading into their biggest game in decades.

Battle in the Trenches

Both teams excel at the line of scrimmage, particularly on defense. Miami's Rueben Bain Jr. earned unanimous All-American honors and delivered a career performance with three sacks against Texas A&M. Ohio State counters with defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, another All-American who anchors one of the nation's stingiest defensive fronts.

The offensive line battle could determine the game's outcome. Miami's line, led by tackle Francis Mauigoa, is slightly more regarded than Ohio State's, potentially giving Beck crucial extra seconds to make plays downfield.

What's at Stake

The winner advances to face either No. 3 Georgia or No. 6 Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal on January 8. For Ohio State, it's another step toward history. For Miami, it's a chance to announce their return to college football's elite after years in the wilderness.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN from AT&T Stadium, where Ohio State has fond memories. The Buckeyes won the first-ever CFP national championship at this venue at the end of the 2014 season.

Ohio State opens as a 9.5-point favorite, but Miami's defense has proven capable of slowing down high-powered offenses. With both teams peaking at the right moment and elite talent on both sides of the ball, this Cotton Bowl promises to deliver the drama befitting a New Year's Eve primetime showdown.

Why Foldable Phones Are Failing: 10 Critical Reasons Consumers Refuse to Buy Them (2025 Analysis)

Foldable smartphones have been heralded as the next revolution in mobile technology since Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold in 2019. Nearly six years later, despite billions in research and development, aggressive marketing campaigns, and iterative improvements across multiple generations, foldable phones still represent less than two percent of global smartphone sales. The dream of a device that transforms from pocket-sized phone to tablet-sized productivity machine remains just that—a dream that most consumers refuse to buy into. While tech enthusiasts and early adopters continue to champion these devices, mounting evidence suggests that foldable phones suffer from fundamental design compromises that may prevent them from ever achieving mainstream success. The reality is sobering: after half a decade of trying to convince consumers, the market is actually stalling, with some manufacturers quietly exiting the category altogether.
